Tried & Tested: Waterproof Gloves

I’ve tried and tested waterproof gloves. These are one of the most important items that a horse owner will ever own. It doesn’t matter if your equines are pets or 5* eventers; gloves around the yard are an absolute necessity.

Waterproof gloves that are actually waterproof but still allow one to undo haynets, do up buckles are incredibly hard to find. Most searches bring up gloves that state that they are waterproof, but in reality they are only water resistant. There are however gloves that allow one to do both and aren’t horribly thick and unwieldy.

I have found the most amazing pair of gloves that do exactly what they say on the tin!

A friend and I went to the London International Horse Show recently and found these at a stall in the shopping area. At £25 they were a chance I was willing to take. If nothing else, they’d be useful gloves around the yard, and good for riding out with their yellow high vis.

I’ve been wearing the gloves for several weeks now and am truly impressed.

The phone fingertips work brilliantly; I don’t have to take my gloves off to answer the phone or answer messages when I’m at the yard.

I soak Fatty’s hay daily so my hands are regularly submerged in water. Wet, cold, hands are simply no fun on a daily basis. Until now, I hadn’t been able to find a pair of gloves which were truly waterproof but yet thin enough to hang haynets, do up bridles, girths, etc. At least, the only alternatives that I have found are extremely expensive, and therefore not gloves that I particularly want to be wearing for yard chores and picking up horse poo!

Taking off thicker gloves is not just a hassle, but inevitably means that and dirt, mud, or such around then covers ones hands and ends up inside the gloves when they’re put back on. That’s not pleasant, and it’s not particularly hygienic.

Equest Waterproof Gloves:

Positives

  • Waterproof
  • Close-fitting
  • Thin
  • Wind-proof
  • Hi-Vis
  • Phone finger pads
  • Fit well, with no finger overhang
  • Replacement warranty

Negatives

  • Non-breathable – but this is as a result of being waterproof. I’d rather have slightly sweaty hands than wet, cold, and muddy hands!

There are so many positives, that being unbreathable is a small price to pay for having dry hands, especially in winter.

The gloves fit well, perhaps a little snug around the wrist for getting on, but the fingers aren’t far too long like many brands.

Conclusion

There are many gloves on the market, but most aren’t really waterproof, and those that are, are either really thick and therefore difficult to use whilst wearing, or else are particularly expensive. These Equest gloves are everything they say they are and so far, for the last few weeks have remained waterproof. They have also shown no signs of wear and tear even though being worn for several hours each day plus riding. So far, so good.
